Does clear aligner treatment hurt?
This is the question we hear most often from patients considering orthodontic treatment with Invisalign.
The short answer: There is some mild discomfort, but it does not hurt the way traditional braces do.
What you will actually feel
During the first 3–5 days with each new aligner tray, you may notice:
- •Gentle pressure on your teeth (a sign the aligner is doing its job)
- •A slight awkwardness when speaking (this usually resolves on its own within 1–2 days)
- •Your tongue and cheeks need a little time to adjust
How it compares to metal braces
| Criteria | Invisalign | Metal braces |
|---|---|---|
| Pain level | Mild, temporary | Can be more painful after each tightening |
| Rubbing/irritation | None | May rub against cheeks/tongue |
| Removable for eating | Yes | No |
| Cleaning | Easy | More complicated |
